I've looked back on the #memade slow fashion movement this past Summer and have put together a list of the top 5 Big Four sewing patterns by Instagram popularity! The companion post to this one is the top 15 Indie Sewing Patterns for Summer 2020.
In the sewing world, patterns fall into one of two camps, indie/independent patterns or big four patterns. The sewing pattern companies that comprise the "Big Four" are Vogue, McCalls, Butterick and Simplicity.
OK so let's get to it, but first I should mention that by Summer, I mean northern hemisphere summer as that's where the core contingent of the sewing community lives. But those of us down under will be looking to these summer trends in the coming weeks!
The top 5 Big Four sewing patterns for Summer 2020:
5. M7974 Misses' Dresses // #m7974
The #m7974 is a buttoned front dress with a fitted bodice and gathered skirt with side seam pockets. There are some fun sleeve options to choose from too. Its a really versatile pattern with some beautiful makes popping up on the gram. I'd love to sew one of these up in our Urban Leo EcoVero by Mind the MAKER.
4. M7946 Misses' Dresses // #m7946
The #m7946 is a pullover dress with elasticized upper edge and waist. Some folks on the gram have been shirring instead of using elastic. This would look great in our Pink Frankie Linen. Loving the shirt pattern hack version of this pattern too.
3. #SashaMcCalls - Misses' Dresses & Sash // #m8036
Those sleeves! Big puffy sleeves have been really popular recently and this dress by McCall's delivers. Its a front wrap dress with 3/4 statement sleeves and a double ruffle hem. This would look so pretty in our Frankie Blue Linen Check by Merchant & Mills.
2. Misses' Deep-V Kimono-Style Dresses with Self Tie // #v9253
This deep V neck dress by Very Easy Vogue is really beautiful. There's so many glamorous versions popping up on Instagram. I think this would look gorgeous sewn up in our Cider striped Tencel or our Neon Fizz Linen/Cotton for something more casual.
1. M7969 Misses' Dresses // #m7969
And the winner is the #m7969! This is going to come as no surprise to most of you as this has clearly dominated our feed this past Summer. The sleeves on this one are so glorious. It's a loose-fitting pullover dress with voluminous sleeves and hem ruffles. Lots of people have been making #m7969 tops as well. The See You At Six Tropic Flowers Viscose would look beautiful made up into one of these dresses.
And there you have it! A round up of the top 5 big four sewing patterns in slow fashion for Summer 2020. I haven't sewn a big four pattern for a really really long time, but this list has inspired me, I think I'm going to just have to make the #m7969.
